Baby crawling on floor

The Ultimate Guide to Baby-Proofing Your Home

Once your baby starts crawling, the world becomes one giant exploration zone. Here’s a room-by-room guide to keeping your little adventurer safe.

Kitchen

The kitchen is full of hazards. Install cabinet locks on lower cabinets, use stove knob covers, and keep sharp objects and cleaning supplies well out of reach. A baby gate at the kitchen entrance is one of the best investments you can make.

Living Room

Cover sharp furniture corners with edge guards. Secure heavy furniture like bookshelves and TVs to the wall with anti-tip straps — this is one of the most important and often overlooked safety measures. Keep small objects, coins, and batteries off low surfaces.

Bathroom

Always keep the toilet lid closed (toilet locks are inexpensive and easy to install). Set your water heater to 120°F or below to prevent scalding. Never leave a child unattended near water, even for a moment.

Nursery and Bedrooms

Use outlet covers throughout the house. Keep crib free of loose blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals. Make sure window blinds don’t have accessible cords, and install window guards or stops on upper-floor windows.

Stairs and Hallways

Install gates at both the top and bottom of stairs. Choose hardware-mounted gates for the top of stairs (pressure-mounted gates can be pushed out). Keep hallways well-lit and clutter-free.

General Tips

  • Get down on your hands and knees and look at each room from your baby’s perspective
  • Keep emergency numbers visible and a first-aid kit accessible
  • Check for recalled products regularly at cpsc.gov
  • Re-evaluate as your child grows — what was safe at 6 months may not be at 12 months
