Feeding Your Baby: Bottle Tips Every Parent Should Know

Whether you’re exclusively bottle-feeding or combining breast and bottle, these practical tips will make feeding time smoother for both you and your baby.

Choose the Right Bottle

Not all bottles are created equal. Some babies prefer certain nipple shapes over others, so don’t buy a dozen of the same kind before testing. Start with a few different styles and let your baby decide. Anti-colic bottles with vented systems can help reduce gas and fussiness.

Get the Temperature Right

Test milk temperature on the inside of your wrist — it should feel lukewarm, not hot. Never microwave bottles as this creates dangerous hot spots. Instead, warm them in a bowl of warm water or use a bottle warmer.

Paced Bottle Feeding

Hold the bottle at a slight angle rather than straight up. This technique, called paced feeding, lets your baby control the flow and reduces the risk of overfeeding. Pause every few minutes to let them catch up.

Burping is Essential

Babies swallow air during feeding, which can cause discomfort and spitting up. Burp your baby after every 2-3 ounces. Try different positions: over the shoulder, sitting up on your lap, or lying face-down across your knees.

Hands-Free Feeding Solutions

There are moments when you need your hands free — when you’re caring for an older sibling, eating your own meal, or just need a break. A quality bottle holder can safely support your baby’s bottle while you stay close and attentive.
